Empty Moon's founding teacher James Ford, Osho, in addition to being a Soto Zen priest and authorized teacher in the "Harada Yasutani" reformed Soto koan curriculum, is a Unitarian Universalist minister. He is minister-emeritus of the First Unitarian Church of Providence and currently serves as consulting minister for the Unitarian Universalist Church in Anaheim.
A number of us share a dual identity with Unitarian Universalism and Zen Buddhism. In practice what this means is that while our sanghas are fully within the Zen and specifically Soto Zen Buddhist streams with numerous personal and institutional connections to the larger Soto Zen Buddhist & Harada Yasutani koan Zen communities, we have a slight bias toward the rational spirit of Unitarian Universalism and a desire for a flatter hierarchy. This often. means while upholding the tradition of transmission and teacher-student relationships, we tend to err, as all communities do one way or another, for us on the side of egalitarianism.
